Samsung 245b & i1display2

Postby The Crofter » Wed Mar 25, 2009 8:24 pm

I have just calibrated my display and find the RGB settings are acting a bit weird. The i1display2 seems to be functioning correctly and passes self test and calibration. During the monitor calibration I can only achieve my 6500 setting at R=0 G=0 and B=16. Testing it by increasing blue to maximum has virtually no effect on the i1display2 but the screen changes noticeably. Same for the other two colours. I would have thought the i1display2 would register each colour off the top scale as the intensity is increased.

The calibration process seems to work ok but there is a marked difference between the screen and 3800. Obviously something is dying, either way it will be expensive

Any thoughts ?

From what I can glean it seems my monitor may be on its way out so I need to think about a replacement. Funny that I thought the Samsung was a good performer in the graphics field but looking at a number of reviews it seems not to be the case.

Currently looking at Eizo or Lacie to source my next monitor from.

Recommendations from anyone please.

Well I have enjoyed this thread :)

Just purchased a NEC Spectraview 2690 so hopefully that will make life easier.

That's quick. Fourteen hours from identifying a problem to purchasing a new monitor! You should enjoy the 2690, though.

lol

If I did not act quickly I would spend forever trying to decide which one to buy. At this level I doubt I would be able to see the differences between two monitors and whatever happens I should get a dramatic improvement in colour accuracy. Also I scan and print watercolours, an absolute bugger to match as the way watercolour paint/paper reacts and appears is different to the inkjet process. At present it is costing me a fortune printing proofs and on a couple of occasions I have made a loss. One of my customers requires Hahnemuhele paper which costs around £4.50 / A3+ sheet. Ultimately I have to proivide a proof on the actual paper so over time these cost all add up.

Actually the main reason is to reduce my hair loss and the large bump on my forehead when banged against the wall.....

Just as a followup....

NEC monitor arrived today so I pretended not to notice it and got on with other stuff. Gave up after 2 minutes and installed it on my pc. Installation fairly straightforward, latest calibration software downloaded from the website. Went through the calibration process about 5 times and now think I know what I am doing. Many features and options I have never heard of before so a bit of a learning curve. Made three prints on the dye sub, 2400 (cis) and 3800. Happy with all three, dye sub prints a bit vivid compared with inkjet but there are colour controls on the printer that have not been touched so I think all will be ok after a bit of tweaking. Acid test was a complex watercolour printed on the 3800 and compared with the screen - absolutely effing marvellous. Well I guess it should be for £1100 but at least that money has been well spent - phew.
