Epson V500 Scanner

I'm looking for a new scanner but cannot really justify the V700 to the family treasurer

I've been looking at some reports on the new V500 and it looks like this might be a replacement for the 4990. Has anybody seen one in operation? Is it just a revamped 4990 or is it a complete new machine?

Any thoughts would be welcome.

Price is some kind of vague indication of quality, certainly within a single manufacturer’s range.
Without full A4 scanning area it doesn’t appear to be a direct replacement for the 4990 – it’s more similar to the 4490, although it does have an LED light source which means less warm-up time.

As bez said, it is the replacement for the 4490/repackaging of 4490 components with the exception of the lens. The rebates have already started in the US and you can pick one up for $189 after rebate with free shipping from buy.com (no affliation, just had to look this information up yesterday for someone else). As usual, the 6400 ppi is way overstated but the scanner does produce nice scans of medium format. There is a thread over on the rangefinder site with examples and they look quite decent.

Thats a good price, did a check just now and seems to be selling for about £172 in the UK. One of the better sellers seems to be BT - not sure why they are selling scanners these days, but here you go

Thank you for the pointers, it looks like I'm really waiting for the V600... or back to the financial authority to plead for more funding!
