Error: EPSON JPEG PLUG IN ... unable to write to file.

Postby JERRY on Wed Dec 26, 2007 8:39 pm

Jerry here again with a new problem. Today in an effort to finish my slide scanning project, after loading the scannng utility I get the error box which says

EPSON JPEG PLUGIN
unable to write to file

I don't have a clue, and would be very appreciative if someone could jump in here with any suggestion or help

On another subject .. I see as of 2/07 Epson shows a software udate for my scanner like 12181.exe

Any +'s or -'s here?

thank you so much for any help
Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I don't recall seeing that problem in my ownership but when things like that come up and won't go away I usually re-boot the pC quite early in the analysis process to see if that assists. Mostly seems to work.

On the other hand, following you comments above, I realised that I have never checked for driver updates. So I did. Downloaded the new release, and went through the install process ...

... resulting in manual searches for a number of drivers.

I have no idea if the ones I picked are the right ones or should have been replaced by the newly installed update.

I have not found anything yet to tell me what the changes are between my original install as per the CD that came with the scanner and the new release.

There were no update instructions as far as I could tell so I have no idea if I might have screwed the installation.

After a while the update seemed to complete OK but the scanner was identified as new hardware and some drivers were awol - hence the manual searches. I only found single instances of the programs (plus their backup copies) so assume they are the right ones.

Epson Scan now runs - I will see what the scanner does tomorrow. It's a bit late to have it whirring and whistling tonight. Fingers crossed that it works without the need to spend more time on it.

Thanks Grant
Boy, sometimes you (me) really feel dumb. I know that at the first sign of a quirky acting program, the first thing you should do is reboot. And after I shut down and later booted back up, error gone!

Will check in again tomorrow on what you learned about the updated software.

Earlier this year I had to rebuild my PC. I installed new drivers for my 4870 (I think they're the same as the 4990). I don't remember it installing well, may have been me, but I think I had to install twice.

There seems to be some added functionality in the scanning software for better colour control at scan time, otherwise much as before - BUT - I haven't had a black scan for a long time, so maybe this problem's been quietly fixed. Maybe not as I mostly scan manually with profiles - to avoid problems like this.
