I'd like to come back to this topic and share my experiences with you.
Well, I updgrade to CS3. After Installing from DVD and a downloading orgy of about 100-150 MB for fixes, patches, etc. I have CS3 running now in it's current version and release state.
Now I'm able to open my tif-images scanned by a 4990 with Silverfast AI and stored in 16 bit color mode with Adobe 1998 color profile embedded. So far I tested scans from my 6x6 slides with a scanner resolution of 3200 dpi. This results in images with nearly 7000 x 7000 pixel and a file size of nearly 300 MB. The files can be opened with Camera Raw 4.3.1 now - anyway if from PS CS3 or Bridge 2.
Now I'm happy again and can go ahead with post processing my photos and can try the new "tricks" from Scott Kelby's 7pointphotos book
I'd like to say a big Thank you to all of you who helped me with your hints and recommendations!
BTW I read about how to improve the sharpness on scans taken by a EPSON 4990 scanner in the yahoo scanner forum some time ago. As I remember one method was to put one (or more) business cards between film holder and glass plate. The other was to buy a special film holder with built-in possibility of height adjustment. I bought one but found it to much time consumptive to place and fix the slides in the holder.
