I don't seem to be able to save to jpg unless I flatten layers, but that's fine; I started saving a psd file (which for HD space reasons I will store on DVD with the original TIF and keep it with the slides). You're quite right about battling bad exposure. There isn't much silver left on the film. I'll have a closer look at #6, it's not a keeper, but another chance to better understand sharpness. I've added a few more scans to the page. I wonder if someone could give me pointers on using USM for a naturally soft image like #15.

Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing that what's meant here is that there's no need to save as jpegs. However if you do, layers aren't supported. For this you need .psd.

On the edits, all images need different adjustments, depending on how they were exposed & developed. There's no specific formula and auto settings in most editing programs often get things wrong. I'd like to download, play a little and then post revised versions. Is that OK with you?

Try something like USM amount 25; radius 50 followed by - amount 15; radius 30 if it needs more

Don't understand this. When you select a layered psd and save as jpg you will get a warning saying it will save as a copy and a small indicator by the layers check box. Just click save to continue and the quality selector will appear. Adjust accordingly and the file is saved. No flattening of layers is needed. I use CS3 but this has been a feature of PS as long as long as I can remember.
