Epson Scan auto crop

Postby mich8261 on Fri May 22, 2009 10:34 pm

still climbing the learning curve! I have moved on from my first project scanning Agfa Scala B&W slides and I learned a lot. I am now scanning a roll of Tri-X shot @ 1600. I have some night shots with a lot of black sky that Epson Scan just crops out. I tried all 3 Thumbnail Cropping Area settings to no avail. I also tried selecting the Off setting for Trimming. Most thumbnails have a document size of 1.5 in. x 1.03 in. (and the same for Target size), but the ones that are cropped come in at 1.5 in. x 0.65 in.

I'd appreciate if anyone can tell me how to manually set the crop area for those frames.

Thank you.

common problem, but no issue.
Assuming dpi etc. are set:

Turn off thumbnails.
Make sure continuous auto exposure is off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(if you don't do this, adjusting the size of a marquee after adjustingt eh exposure settings will kick in the autoexposure and throw your settings away... )
Do a preview scan.
Use the mouse to draw a marquee in the preview window.
Adjust marquee size/position to suit.
Adjust exposure as needed (auto followed by manual is a good starting point)
Next to preview window are icons to replicate/delete the marquees. If you replicate a marquee it's exposure settings should be in the replica.
Select marquee(s) and scan.

Although you can't save a marquee set, it will persist across scans and will still be there the next time you restart epson scan.
