Comparing 35 mm. to 645 Scans

Postby wesjr on Sat Feb 27, 2010 1:33 pm

I just got a 4900 Epson scanner this week. Just lost my old Epson 800 & Minolta Dimage scanners. The sharpness with 35 mm scans is very good after doing FocalBlade selective sharpening in CS4. My slide mounts must have the film in the sweet spot for scanning sharpness. When I use Epson Scan, the USM is unchecked or turned off.

The results with 645 chromes are not as sharp. Wonder if I need a shim under the supplied MF film holder...

Are you sure the roll film has not got a slight distortion when mounted in the holder?

I found that using Dougs film holder gave me better results than with Epson's own holder - take a look here

Vincent,

Thanks for the kind response. I will buy Doug's MF Epson film holder. Not sure if I should get the 1 mm or .5 mm multiple adjustable one. Apparently the sweet spot for my Epson 4990 Expression scanner could be from .5 to 4 mm above the scanning glass.

Thanks for your help. Photo-i is the best...
