An interesting picture, although I think I prefer the foliage colours in the original. The sky could have been darkened slightly in Lightroom or similar with a graduated filter and maybe contrast added to the foreground with a second graduated filter.

is the heron maybe in the wrong place "The heron adds a nice touch to the overall picture, although I didn’t notice it at first"

I would level the horizon and crop to move the distant hills to the right. I would have to change it as below before I hang it on my wall 8)

I did try placing a cut out of the heron to the right hand side, but this didn't look right. I think Colin's placement is right, although maybe the bird could have been a bit bigger.

Maybe this is where the rule of thirds might help to give the heron greater prominance (I missed the heron as well until I read your comment Vincent). On the other hand, maybe its fishing so its in stealth mode :)
