Roller Marks using R1800

Postby The Wanderer » Sun Feb 03, 2008 7:23 pm

Hi,

I have printed without problems before but am now getting a roller mark on A4 paper. Viewing the top of the sheet, which comes out of the printer first, the mark starts about 30mm from the top (but maybe less because of the white border, and 35mm from the left. The mark is 15mm wide and about 42mm long.

I am using Innova Satin paper with the matt paper setting (because I got a higher Dmax).

I have fed a sheet of paper with windlene on it to clean the rollers and have changed the setting in the print drive to 'thick' but to no avail.

I have access problems to the rear of the machine and have difficulties using the rear auto and manual slots. The paper doesn't get taken up and the machine flashes the paper warning red light at me.

Any suggestions please?

Setting to "thick" adjusts head spacing, but AFAIK not rollers.
Presuming that the paper is "fast dry" type, then best way to avoid roller pizza-wheel marks is usually to slow the printer down. Turn High Speed (bidirectional) printing off, and use photo RPM setting.
As far as using a satin paper with matte settings goes, this is possibly part of the problem. Photo RPM will be disabled, and unless you're using a custom profile made for that paper, then it will probably lay down too much ink.

Thanks for your advice. I have not seen pizza wheel marks. This was a roller mark. From another list, someone told me how to set up the rear feeder and the problem has gone away – I hope permanently!

I guess you are in New Zealand and may have a European model and thus the same as mine, which will only take A4 width paper because the entry feed is blocked at that width. Can anyone tell me if the American models allow letter size only or if you can print full width through that slot?

Thanks,

Colin Conway

Oh okay - the paper feed roller.
Do you mean for Epson R800 or R1800?
AFAIK all R1800 have maximum paper width of 13 inches, either for top hopper, or for rear feed slot.

I have the R1800. The moulding that the rear feed guide slots into has a downward plastic projection that limits the paper width to A4.

If other machines permit 13" wide I may try to remove that downward plastic projection (when it is out of warranty).

That's the first time I heard of that!

Are you sure that something hasn't come ajar - or fallen in the rear paper feed mechanism?

Sounds to me like a warranty claim is needed now.

American models allow 13 in. wide paper. According the the Epson UK web site, the R1800 is supposed to take A3 paper (11.69 in. wide), while the R800 takes A4 paper (8.27 in. wide). If yours only takes A4 there is definitely something amiss. If this is true, what you have is an R1800 that only prints R800 paper sizes!

The R1800/2400 (shared chassis) and most other printers in this class take 13" width paper - a little larger than A3 (just under 12" wide), sometimes called "super A3" or "A3+". A3 = 297mm width, A3+ = 329mm / 13".
The Epson UK site you reference mentions this - A3+ / 329mm.
Epson supply 329mm width sheets and rolls. AFAIK Epson don't supply 297mm width rolls.

The front and rear guides are not crippled and take 13" wide A3+ paper. I am only asking about the slot at the back of the printer below the rear guide.

I've never used roll paper, but I just looked at and measured the slot in the back of mine and it appears to be able to take 13 in. paper. If your printer takes A3+ in the front I can see no reason it should be restricted to A4 in the back. I can see nothing in the specs on the Epson UK site that indicates that is the case. If you can't get your printer to take the specified size of paper through that slot I think it would be worth a query to Epson.
