Cheapish panoramas from scanner.

Vincent

For someone who is now fully digital one reason for buying a top end scanner could be as a kind of kit with a panoramic film camera (chips are not cheap as chips and a cheap panoramic chip is a long way off). Does/could the Minolta handle a panoramic neg? The little lugs on the holder look almost designed to cut off. Could the software cope?

To be more specific, can cut film hang out the end of the holder so that you can scan twice and then merge in Photoshop?

panoramics

There is already a topic in the international minolta forum about panos made with the dimage scan elite 5400 I. The way to do is to scan the first 36mm, than to displace the film for some mm and do the second scan on the second frame of the filmholder. You´ll get two pictures which are easily set together in Photoshop or else other program. The scan conditions have to be fixed steping from the first to the second picture.
I cannot imagine why this way of doing it should not be possible with the Scan Elite 5400 II?!

Thanks for that Harry. However I was wondering whether I could get a new lease of life from my Mamiya 7II by getting the panoramic adaptor and then scanning the longer panoramic neg.

Many film scanners use a "screw" mechanism to move the film past the image sensors. The size of this "screw" is limited to what is need to scan a single frame. Not sure if that is how the Minolta works, but would not be surprised.

I think your answer is to buy scanner that will take larger film sizes and maybe adapt the holder for your particular needs.

Thank you Costas.

It will be interesting to see how the Minolta stacks up against the Epson 4990 which could be the way to go. Of course in that case I might just as well scan the 6x7 neg and crop on the computer. But then again most mini-labs do not handle 120 film. mmmm.

kodak has noritsu-printers which can handle perforated 35mm film and take up to 72mm in one piece. 30x91cm prints(matte and glossy) are very cheap. 15-19 chf depending how many from the same.
check panoguide.com ask kodak where they are in action.
a german guy offers a rollfilm-solution for some coolscans but: it cannot handle panoramic sizes. wait for new epson v700/v750(wet mounting version) and hope the results are good enough. i guess one could get very sharp results up to 15x. with 4990 i can enlarge 12x with grain suppressed(unsharp) but my razorsharp panorama(part of a long stripe) looks very good. 2450-scans are not sharp at all. forget that scanner. i will use julio fernandez scanmax-wetmounting-holder(we will develop different panoramic masks). this will provide less grain and perfect colors and constrast. he(a chemist) has developped a new liquid. go to his yahoo-list at:
