HP Printer Ink Consumption

I think most would agree that HP ink costs are the highest, primarily because they package several colours into a single cartridge. When the first colour has depleted, the whole cartridge must be replaced or refilled.

The 7xxx series printers used various combinations of 56, 57, 58 and 59 cartridges. The 8xxx series printers use different cartridges (94, 95, 99 and 100 in Canada). The newer cartridges are a little cheaper but they contain much less ink.

For example cartridge 57 (cmy), $54, 17ml total volume, $3.17/ml
cartridge 95 (cmy), $37, 7ml total volume, $5.28/ml

Does any one have experience with ink consumption issues with these two series of printers and cartridges?

I've been researching printers for over six weeks and this was a major concern for me. IT-Enquirer has a series of articles backed up by a testing facility called SpencerLab which seems to refute the well entrenched idea that HP Tri-color cartridges are less cost effective than single cartridges. According to them both Canon and Epson which use individual color cartridges waste far more ink in their start up and cleaning cycles than HP.
They claim that anywhere from 31-to 41% of ink is used in these procedures. They also claim that HP's are able to deliver approx. 81% of the ink to the paper since HP does not run a cleaning cycle every time it's started up and everytime a new cartrige is replaced.
I've heard people state that it's a disadvantage to have the print head in the cartridge, well it seems to me that if you get a brand new head every time you replace a cartridge that can be an advantage in the long run considering what it costs to send in an Epson for a new head.

I've been using Epson printers for almost 12 years now and i can tell you that the prining costs are really high if you do artwork on your printer.
The ink consumption is incredibel much.

On my Stylus Photo 900 I need new inks every 12 to 15 pages full format color DIN A4 sized.

This ends up @ roughly 50 EUR for max. 15 pages = 3,30 EUR / page.

I am now choosing between the HP Designjet 90 and 130 because I've seen some prints and I've seen some quotations stating that the printing costs on the Hp 130 / 90 are less then half the cost @ comarable printing result or even better @ larger size compare to my entry level printer!!

So I think if you go for a semipro printer @ HP or any other company printing costs might drop. Specially @ the 30 / 90 and 130 series for HighEnd prosumres

If you look carefully at Spencer Lab's site, all their reviews show HP winning against the competition. And the reason why, HP sponsored them to do the testing. You can inquire about this by asking an HP rep.....almost all reviews show Canon to be the most cost-effective in terms of consumables. Also, Canon shows you exactly how much ink you have with their ink tanks, and are the easiest to refill.

I have an HP Deskjet 5150 printer and can vouch for ink consumption being a bone of contention with me. However, the build quality of these printers is second to none IMHO. I worked with two small HP printers in a busy environment and they just kept taking all that could be thrown at them. I chose the HP 5150 because it was a front loader at a reasonable price and suited my tiny office space.

The cheapest 56 (Black) cartridge I have seen is from 7dayshop.com at £10.99 sterling. The postage is quite expensive, so it is best to wait until you need other items which will be added for the same postage. I buy Fuji Velvia from this company--very reasonable prices.
