Transcend 16Gb CF card and D200

Postby john frum » Fri May 30, 2008 11:26 am

I just bought a Transcend 16 Gb (x133) card to use with my D200 - without first checking compatibility... The camera only recognises it as 8GB which surprises me a bit as the D200 isn't exactly an ancient model. Is this a show-stopper or is there maybe a software upgrade addressing this?

A quick check of its performance (writing raw + basic jpeg) shows it to be about the same speed as a Sandisk Ultra 2. Firing rapid consecutive 3 frame bursts in this format it gets to about 21 shots before the buffer fills up.

Btw the card is priced at £45.49 + VAT + delivery - which made it a pretty good deal. If only I could use all 16 Gb...

My ladyfriend has a Canon 400D. Might this camera see all 16 Gb?

John,

A quick check on the Sandisk web site's Compatibility checker lists their 16Gb cards as compatible with both D200 and 400D. Of course it does not say whether the cameras can see all 16Gb!

Mind you the price you quote is indeed very good for a 16Gb card and in the typical range for an 8Mb card ...

I would be tempted to try it in the Canon and see what capacity the 400D reports for it.

If it says 8Mb, send it back OR try it in a card reader and see what the PC thinks it offers.

On the other hand there are some interesting comments here but skip the first half of them ...

Hi John,

I assume you tried formatting the card while it was inserted in the D200, correct?
Cheers,

Hi again (very belated response, sorry; btw the forum is pretty inactive at the moment!)
yes, certainly I tried to format it - it formatted sucessfully at 8gb and at 16 Gb on my ladyfriend's Canon 400. I seem to recall checking the Nikon site and discovering that the max card size is indeed 8Gb. Amazed that no-one's noticed this.

That's surprising John - not sure how that limitation comes about. Generally cards are either FAT16 formatted and so limited to 2GBytes or their FAT32 which I think is 2 TBytes.

Mind you, I do have an 8 GByte Lexar card that my camera is happy with, as well as all my card readers - but the portable data-storage device refuses to recognise it, so cannot never copy it when in the field. I have never figured that one out, either - I think a developer somewhere just decided that memory flash capacity will never exceed X so put that in as an arbitrary limit.

Hi Costas
well, the answer is to have a girlfriend who has a Canon 400D. With only a little misrepresentation, it's even possible to make a profit!
