R2400 strange noise

Postby fabujni » Thu Apr 01, 2010 12:48 pm

I have problem with my R2400.
If I try to do a cleaning session, the print head moves around, as usual and then, after maybe 15 seconds of cleaning, the head goes to the right side, still cleaning and then at one point it get stuck in the position and there is a loud noise coming from the printer as if the head was trying to go left but is stuck.
I was advice by an expert on R2400 to put oil on the metal bar and wipe one way the plastic strip too which comes above the belt which is moving the head.
I've done that using 3 in 1 oil and although I managed to get one cleaning session work, when I tried to do another cleaning session I get the same problem.
Since then, always get the problem?
Anybody can help?
I wonder if something from the mechanism is actually holding the print head or if really is the metal bar which needs more oil.
The fact is the head is moving nicely on the bar when i switch on the printer, doing several long movement all along the bar before starting the cleaning so I don't see how it can be a lack of oil!

The head tracks the strip as it moves across so it knows exactly where it is. Sometimes you can get a deposit on this strip which confuses the head and it still thinks it needs to continue left. The reverse is true as well which probably accounts for your fault. Cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol or some inert cleaning substance is a good idea. I would think it highly unlikely that the bar requires oiling. Also check there is nothing fouling the head to prevent movement and the metal bar is free of debris. If nothing works then I would think it is a problem with the position sensor in the head, something that you cannot do anything about, and this will require an Epson repair.

I currently have a dead 2400 here that is mechanicaly sound except for a failed head. Could be used for spares if your "expert" is also capable of dismantling yours. However you could end up in a worse position and there is no guarantee it would work.

Probably worth contacting Epson and getting a repair quote.

Thanks for your help!
I will see if I can find any debris that might blocked the head.
If not, as you adviced, I might contact Epson see if it's worth repairing.

If not then you have a good excuse to get a new toy.... I moved to a 3800 and love it.

Hi there. Just out of interest, do you leave the top hatch up or close it while this is going on? I had a similar issue when I left the hatch up. I vaguely (and probably incorrectly!) recall at the time that this was counter to what the instruction manual told me to do. It's probably not your issue but I thought I would share it. Hope you get it sorted.

Cheers
