My Canon EOS-7D Photos

Postby wesjr » Sat Sep 11, 2010 3:29 am

Just recently started testing my new 7D. Really like the camera. It's better for wildlife photos than my 5D Mk ll. Really like the new AF. Still use both cameras. Wanted the 7D for action sequences and use with my long lenses. Love the 5D Mk ll with macro, landscapes and people.

Take a look if you like at my two attached photos from the St Augustine Alligator Farm...

Welcome back Charlie - like that shot of the tortoise - quite dramatic and not what I normally expect of those critters

How big are they ?

Costas,

Great to be back. The tortoises are not as big here in captivity as on the Galopagos Islands. Most likely the males are about 400 pounds...

400 pounds  that's heading for sumo wrestler territory

Thought I might visit the Galapagos - see if I can do that next year. Will check the weather charts first, although I suspect March to June is probably good for that part of the world.

Great shots Charlie!
In terms of pure IQ how would you score the 7d considering the 5DII as the reference ?

Robert,

The 7D has a very good sensor but not as good as my 5D Mk ll. I was trained in a class this past April in how to PP images from the 7D with PS. I like the results very much. The AF is outstanding. Needed the extra reach from the cropped sensor and extremely quick response. Will use my 5D Mk ll for people photos this weekend. Am very pleased with both cameras. Needed a 7D for my bird photography. I find it has very fine grain like film. Most likely from placing 18 MP in a 1.6 cropped sensor. Use Topaz Denoise 5.0 if I go 800 ISO or higher...

Robert,

Not sure what the 5D Mk lll will have. Certainly agree with you on an updated AF system. Will cost more than my 5D Mk ll,I guess.
Here's another photo from my 7D.

Charlie,

It's obvious that for landscape the 5DII is remarkable
I put the 5dII lenses on my 450D especially the fabulous Canon 70-200mm f4 IS L which is by far my best lens (and one of the best ever produced, in terms of zoom of course)
The results are really much behind the 5DII in terms of IQ

Might post some comparisions in my landscape foliage issue thread sometime.

The central AF sensor is really excellent the other ones are for window dressing only

Another issue with the FF sensor is it's ability to get so much dust on it after a while that is difficult to remove
I never got that issue with cropped sensors

Robert,

Know what you mean about the 70- 200 mm f/4 IS. I have the older 70 - 200 mm USM and it gives fantastic results when used on my 5D Mk ll. Used it this past weekend shooting candids of my friends. My lens is not as good as yours but its still most excellent. Just have to be careful with the outside AF sensors like you say. Take a look at two examples. One was a monarch butterfly cacoon from this summer at 3200 ISO using my Sigma 180 mm. APO HSM DG f/3.5 macro. The other is a friend with her son using my 70- 200 mm f/4 USM. The 5D Mk ll is a great camera still IMO. Just have to be careful with the AF...
