I am working on a item, which I hope to have on line today. I have some sample prints, including the photo-i test chart. Intial thoughts on the printer are good.

The cartridges are the same capacity as those on the 8450, although I do believe they also have double capacity cartridges. I will post more on this in the morning, I reveived more info today which I have to wade through first.

Cart sizes

Postby Quentin » Sat Mar 05, 2005 4:19 pm

It amuses me to see these A3+ printers referred to as "professional" products when they continue to use pathetic little ink carts costing a fortune (even if double size ones are available).

It is left to independent suppliers like Lyson and others to market "unauthorised" high-capacity continuous ink solutions. It would be perfectly easy for a similar, possibly better, solution to be offered by the manufacturer.

It's about time more of a fuss was made about this. One does not get proper ink carts below Epson 4000 size printers. Even on My Epson 7600, it took months and some brave soul testing before it became clear you could use the larger (and much more economical) 9600 carts in the 7600.

The smaller carts might be OK (if expensive) for the casual amateur making occasional prints, but they are hopeless for any power user.

Hi Quentin, nice to have you back.

I agree with your points, a professional such as yourself will obviously need higher capacity and more economical supplies. The average hobbyist may not have the need for a larger capacity, especially if they only produce a few prints here and there. Their problem could also be inks that dry up or clogg up the print heads.

This new printer looks promissing for "the average hobbyist" because 13x18" size is up to the number of megapixels they usually buy!

Vincent's preview prints look fine, Wilhem research is reassuring about the print permanence, if the printers clogs you just throw away the cartrige and the printer "connect seamlessly to Adobe Photoshop® applications".

Two questions:
- panorama printing restricted to 8.5 x 24-inch ?
- what results when printing on rag papers?

In response to the questions. HP are sending this printer over to photo-i in about 14 days time. This will be the next interactive review. I will test any feature you want then.

Vincent,

Any updates on the 8750 review and whether you have received one yet? I really enjoyed the R1800 review and look forward to this one as well as the Canon IP9910 when it's released outside of Japan.

Thanks,

Micah

It hasn't arrived as yet. I expect it will be here next week - today I'm going to forget the dpi as I'm off on an Easter Egg hunt, :P

I'm eagerly anticipating this review, especially since I have already pre-ordered an HP 8750 based on previews, etc. and my personal problems with the Epson and Canon alternatives.

I read the recently posted review of the HP 8750 at Steve's Digicams and was a little disappointed in it. It really reads like a walk thru the manual and "how to" do this and that, rather than an objective opinion on its abilities or curses. Steve does make a general conclusion that says the printer is excellent, but has an occasional oddity, but very little of the in-depth stuff like I've seen here on the R1800 interactive review. If Vincent's review is even close to the depth of his R1800 review, this will be worth waiting for. Hopefully the review will arrive prior to my HP 8750 which is scheduled for April 22 (approx), so I can still push the cancel button if necessary and re-evaluate the R1800 or Canon (though Canon has archival issues that bother me for selling artwork/prints).

Vincent,

Any updates on the 8750 you're expecting? After reading your last review I ordered a R1800. I enjoy reading your thorough reviews and am looking forward to the one for the 8750.

Thanks,

Micah

In the review of the Hp 8750 at photographyblog.com, it states that when producing borderless black and white prints one cannot select the black print cartridge only. So it uses the colour cartridges and makes a sepia print. Unless I misunderstood the comment.

When Vincent reviews this printer perhaps he could address this matter.

The reviewer also had monochrome problems with the Hp 8450.
