What paper have you found to be good?

Postby bmstsm on Thu Oct 05, 2006 12:39 pm

Hi,
As there is no HP advanced paper available here in the UK I wonder what paper people have found to be a good alternative?
I have found Ilford smooth gloss to be grainy.
Hp premium plus also no good.
Anyone tried premium?

Cheers

STAY AWAY FROM PREMIUM/PREMIUM PLUS

Yup, even if you do get the ink to stay on paper it will not stick.... it is entirely designed for Dye-ink. Even if HP lists it as compatible it is untrue!

UK belongs to EC, why not order from someone that stock th paper?? I pay £9 inc 25% VAT for a box of 25 sheets A4 both Satin or Gloss.

I had a large stack of 10x15cm advanced gloss which were included in the ink-set for my 8250... never used them due to poor fading with dye-ink. So glad to have found a good useage. The 9180 prints great on those!

Several, including me, have issues with Ilford. Pity!
Hanhemüle PhotoRag provides nice results, but only printed a few of those.

BTW I emailed HP support asking where to buy the Advanced Paper, they replied with a supplier and having no problems getting the stuff here! Why not try that??

Cheers

Could you share with us where you have found/purchased stock? I am happy to order from anywhere in Europe, but would like to know a place that can be trusted.

Experimented with Jessops A3 Satin

Postby brian1208 on Thu Oct 05, 2006 10:57 pm

using HP Advanced Satin Matte (least I think that's what it is called, its the middle one of the three). I printed one of my favourite b&W pictures using the HP plug-in, set to max DPI + Black & White.

On first inspection I'm pleased. I'll need to see it in daylight but moving from a room lit by a Daylight bulb to one lit with tungsten there is only a little metamerism (slight magenta cast in tungsten - maybe, but very slight). I think there may also be a touch of "bronzing" but again, its very slight.

No sign of pooling and its a nice, even textured print with a good range of greys + black and white in the extremes.

I'm going to have another go using an architectural print to see how it handles more linear detail but its got the fur and whiskers of my Amur Leopard beautifully recorded.

see it here: http://www.imagesfromnature.co.uk/photo_96780.html

PermaJet papers are good (You can buy a box of different samples) and I've also been using Olmec heavyweight satin which is good also and reasonable in cost (recommended to me on this forum)

Kodak Ultra Premium Gloss

Postby brian1208 on Fri Oct 06, 2006 12:29 pm

Checked my B&W print on the Jessops paper in daylight. There is some slight Bronzing at an extreme viewing angle but its not bad.

The print is also a little darker than my (calibrated) monitor but I'll be creating the correct profile using Printfix Pro soon, so that should sort it.

Tonality and detail are still first rate.

I got some of the Kodak paper at discount this morning and have printed out some B&W + Sepia prints (recovered portraits from about 60 years ago). Instant dry + reasonable image quality. No sign of bronzing that I can see. I used the Advanced Gloss profile and printed using max DPI. (Luckily its instant waterproof too as water droplets got onto it from an open window - its hissing down outside. They wiped off with no damage)

Which Jessop paper? I have some A3 Satin, but have not been brave enough to try it, don't want to spread ink about in the printer!
And which Kodak paper?

Webdog,

Goodness, isn't Swedish a difficult language! Usually with a non-english site, I can work out what-is-what, but I was totally stumped with the pages you linked to!

Out of interest, do they have any cartridges in stock ?

Phew...
was wee bit worried :)

Ordered paper and ink (LM, LG and Y) Sunday evening, yesterday order showed ink not in stock and no estimation on delivery date, but just got a confirmation e-mail stating that ink and paper has been shipped, should be here tomorrow!

Paper + profile trials

Postby brian1208 on Wed Oct 11, 2006 3:05 pm

I have just taken delivery of a trial pack of 20+ papers and will be testing them over time.

I will produce a tabulation of Paper Type, Profile Used, Image Type and Result which I will be able to e-mail to anyone interested.

I will also record my findings here, as & when they are tested.

Today's offering is Hahnemuhle William Turner 310g.sm. Its a natural (off-white) textured paper I hope to use for watercolour style landscapes.

Printed using the HP Hahnemuhle Watercolor profile I rate the result as "Excellent". I will use the ratings "Poor", "Acceptable", "Excellent" and "Outstanding". (Excellent being the standard I want for images I would exhibit for sale in local galleries and Outstanding being the best I have ever seen for that type of image)

The image is a shot of a Rainbow over a wet seaside town (Lyme Regis in Dorset, England) Bright white buildings in the left foreground with beach / groynes and sea in front. Middle ground is the Rainbow against a stormy sky with distant hills in the background. So there is a lot of contrast, and detail to handle in addition to the colour range.

this one: http://www.imagesfromnature.co.uk/photo_94406.html

The detail and colour of the buildings is spot on, the shingle on the beach and surf at the sea edge are well rendered and the colours of the rainbow and sky are excellent.

The overall printed image is slightly darker than the screen image but I think this may be because my screen is due to be recalibrated (I'll come back on this later)

Its a combination I shall be using for my Gallery prints in future to get customer reaction - but I like it

Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin

Postby brian1208 on Wed Oct 11, 2006 5:10 pm

with Photo Rag profile, printing a B&W image using Gray inks only.
Standard "Roamn Courtyard" image here:
http://www.imagesfromnature.co.uk/photo_525560.html

Conclusion:

Excellent detail, nice tones but black less intense than with Kodak Ultra Premium photo gloss. It has a lovely traditional look to it. There is however very slight bronzing when viewed at a shallow angle.

EDIT:

I took the B&W prints to my camera club this evening to get a wider view from those still working in "wet processing". They rated both the Kodak and the Photo Rag Satin as equal to good quality classic B&W photo prints

Today's paper

Postby brian1208 on Thu Oct 12, 2006 5:00 pm

Photospeed Lustre Pigment Friendly paper with HP Advanced satin matte profile.

Printed using my standard B&W "Roman Courtyard" image with Grey only inks and max DPI.

Poor to acceptable. Darker than the original image and lacking tonal detail. Definite bronzing (nearly as bad as with the HP Advanced Gloss) - not one I will use again.

With the continuing shortage of inks I'm going to slow down my testing a little. If I don't post for a day or so, its not because I've given up! :)
