Canon launches 3 new printers
Canon has today announced three new printers, the i865, i905D and i965. These replace the i850, S830D and i950.
Building on the popularity of its predecessor, the Bubble Jet i850, the Bubble Jet i865 has an additional black ink for higher contrast and top quality borderless photo printing. Like all of Canon’s latest Bubble Jet printers the i865 is PicBridge compliant, enabling printing via direct connection to any PicBridge compatible camera or camcorder via a USB cable, without the need for a PC.
With print speeds of 23ppm mono and 16ppm colour, Canon claims the i865 is the fastest ink jet printer on the market - great for business people in a hurry. These print speeds are achieved through Canon’s advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology TM print head, which has nozzle density up to seven times that of rival brands. The result? A print head capable of delivering up to 28 million droplets per second - more ink on the page in less time for super fast prints.
Quality and technology
Canon has employed integrated circuited manufacturing techniques to produce a print head capable of delivering a print quality that in many cases exceeds the results of more costly six ink systems of its competitors. MicroNozzles in the i865 print head have an ejection aperture measuring just 10 microns in diameter. This narrow opening, in tandem with Canon’s short nozzle ejection system, creates consistent ink droplet sizes of 2 picolitres that are fired at the paper with force and precision so every ink drop is exactly the same size and travels in exactly the right direction. This degree of control gives fine detail in both colour documents and photo reproduction.
Packed with new photo printing featuresFast, borderless photo printing is now possible on a range of media up to A4. A new covered paper tray has been added to the auto sheet feed to hold and protect 4” x 6” photo paper, allowing users to switch printing modes without swapping paper. printing directly onto compatible CD-R/DVDs is now possible with the inclusion of a detachable CD-R printing unit. the i865 also supports the new industry standard PicBridge protocol. Any compliant camera or camcorder can now print directly to the printer via a USB cable connection, regardless of brand and with no need for a PC.
The i865 also supports a full range of specialist media offered by Canon including the newly introduced Photo Paper Plus, Semi Gloss (SG-101) and Glossy Photo Paper (GP-401).
Speed and functionThe photo print speed of the i865 is up to three times faster than any other product in its class. A borderless 4” x 6” photo print on Canon’s Photo Paper Pro (PR-101) takes only 50 seconds, while a full A4 photo can be printed in 100 seconds. This is also the fastest printer for monochrome and colour in its class, printing up to 23ppm mono and 16ppm colour. Advanced Precision Colour Distribution technology allows high speed bi-directional printing, giving print speeds up to 2.3ppm for A4 full colour page. Single Ink technology reduces waste by ensuring individual colours are only replaced when they have run out.

management system that displays thumbnails to make
it easy to edit and manage images stored on the computer, with features
such as cropping, slide presentation and resizing for emailing.
Also included in Easy-PhotoPrint software, which uses information collected at the time of image capture on Exif 2.2 compliant cameras to create better quality, more natural looking photos. Additionally, Easy-PhotoPrint Plus is now available to work in conjunction with Easy-PhotoPrint. It incorporates new face recognition technology to automatically detect a face, or faces within an image, and apply advanced image optimisation's to improve the final photo print. the software can be downloaded from the Canon Europe website. Easy-Webprint simplifies printing of Internet pages by scaling down output so the entire page is printed even when it extends over multiple screens. Finally, to keep the desktop tidy, all software applications have been brought together under one Easy-ToolBox tool bar.
Optional office features
The i865 can be shared across a network via Pricom network adapters. An Auto Duplex Printing Unit (DPU-10) is available to allow printing on both sides of the paper without manual intervention. An optional Paper-Feed Cassette (PFC-10) attached to the bottom of the printer, increasing plain paper capacity by 250 sheets to 400 sheets.
The 4800 x 1200 dpi1 Bubble Jet i905D is a six-colour photo printer with, claims Canon, unsurpassed print quality and connectability. With card slots for the most popular brands of memory cards, the i905D is also compliant with the new industry standard PicBridge protocol.
A new built-in colour LCD screen can display image thumbnails and provides an intuitive interface for effortless cropping, paper size selection, photo effects and image orientation. Canon’s advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology TM print head with 2 picolitre (pl) Micro-Nozzles delivers fine detail and smooth gradation. This patented technology enables grain-free printing – particularly for skin tones and sky colours. Canon believes that the top photo quality and additional features of the i905D make it a precious tool for any digital camera user who wants the convenience of photo printing without a PC.
Connectability
The i905D has slots for CompactFlash®, Microdrive, Sony Memory Stick, smartMedia, Secure Digital, Multimedia card, Memory Stick DUO, miniSd Card and xD-Picture card. Images stored on any of these memory card types can be selected, displayed and manipulated on the built-in colour LCD viewer and printed without the need to first download to a PC. The printer also supports the new industry standard PictBridge protocol. Any compliant digital camera or camcorder can now print directly to the printer via a USB cable connection, regardless of brand and with no need for a PC. Canon’s range of Bubble Jet Direct compatible digital cameras and digital camcorders continue to be supported.
Quality
The fine print quality results from a combination of factors: the use of a six-colour ink system, including the 1/6 density photo inks, and tiny 2pl droplet size. High Colour inks guarantee vivid colours and high contrast for stunning photo quality. Integrated circuit manufacturing techniques have been used to produce the advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology print head, using Micro-Nozzles with an ejection aperture measuring just 10 microns in diameter. Single Ink technology
Each of the Bubble Jet i905’s six ink colours is stored in an individually replaceable tank. Users are warned with a pop up window on their computer and on the printer’s LCD when a particular colour is running low, and the printer will not start to print a page if there is insufficient ink to complete the print job.

The 4800 x 2400 dpi1 Bubble Jet i965 is the fastest and highest resolution photo printer. Canon’s latest professional series six-ink printer produces a 2400dpi full A4 photo in approximately 60 seconds. A 4” x 6” print takes just 21 seconds, making this an ideal printer for demanding photographers. The i065 is compliant PicBridge.
The i965’s speed results from patented technologies that get more ink on the page in less time and with greater accuracy. Semi-conductor manufacturing techniques are used to create the highest density print head, delivering extremely small droplets from the smallest diameter Micro-Nozzles. The result is a 3072 nozzle print head capable of ejecting up to 73.7 million 2-picolitre (pl) droplets per second. The exacting precision afforded by this advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology combines with the six-ink, 1/6 density photo ink system to create grain-free prints with terrific clarity, contrast, colour range and smoothness of tone.
What about the competition?
The secret to the i965’s speed lies in the print head. Unlike other manufacturers who must assemble their print heads from a multitude of components, Canon employs a proprietary etching process similar to that used in semi-conductor manufacture. the result is smaller nozzles, greater nozzle density and longer print heads. The extremely precise 10-micron diameter nozzles are almost half the diameter of Canon’s nearest rival and are placed seven times closer together. Minuscule 2pl droplets are ejected with high frequency and accuracy. Combined, these features produce a print head that puts more ink down on the page in less time – for record breaking print speeds.
