In this digital age of communication it’s easy to become bombarded with images. There are masses of books on photography and photographic technique, and we have been indulged with wonderful TV documentaries about our amazing planet. So where does it all go from here?
Dorling Kindersley’s book, China, is a visual timeline of the country’s 4,000 year long history. It’s a potent mix of history, culture, religion and science, told by Chinese people through all walks of life from sea fisherman to opera performer.
The photography is wonderful. There are fantastic landscapes, personal portraits and fascinating still life pictures that fill in the details. The more you look at this book, the more there is to see. From the tools of the cricket seller to the birch forest at Heilongjiang it is a pleasure to look and wonder. If you need a bit of encouragement to get out and start taking more pictures – this will do it. Turn off the computer, get the camera out and off you go (not necessarily to China, of course!).
Take your time over this book – it’s an indulgence, which, unlike a TV documentary that dictates the pace, can be pondered over and enjoyed at your leisure. The printing is top quality and the colours stunningly produced.
China is a beautiful book to have if you are interested in photography, travel or history. If you are into all three, you will really enjoy this one.
