Printer card reader. The Canon iP6700D is perhaps the ideal printer for the digital photographer who just wants a no fuss printer to print out their pictures without messing about with image editing applications. There are several ways that this printer can be used. A front Media slot supports the following card types; CompactFlash, Microdrive, Smart Media, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, SD Memory Card and MultiMediaCard (V3.31). xD-PictureCard , Memory Stick Duo , Memory Stick PRO Duo, RS-MMC and miniSD. There is a also a Direct Print Port for PictBridge compliant digital cameras. You can also send files direct to the printer from your mobile phone via an optional Bluetooth unit BU-20, or from your PDA by IrDA 1.2 (JPEG only). The printer also connects to a PC via a USB 2.0 cable. The one notable missing option would be a USB Memory Drive slot.

inserting cards presented no major problems, however, I couldn't get my xD PictureCard to work at all. I will return to direct printing later in this review. The USB cable fits in the the side of the printer at the rear, this in theory means you can place the printer nearer a wall, if it were not for the power cable which plugs into the rear and the rear paper feeder which overhangs the rear. Crop images via the trimming button |
One of the real advantages the iP6700D offers is in its ability to print directly from a memory card or camera without the need to connect to a computer, as a standalone printer it still offers a reasonable amount of control such as cropping, colour correction, page layout etc. The 3.5inch screen displays a clear bright picture, but depending on your card speed it can be slow to work through a full card of pictures. The crop (trimming) control worked very well, just press the Trimming button and a grid is placed over the image, now use the arrow control keys to place the crop in position, and then use the zoom keys to enlarge or reduce the crop grid. The actual image doesn't enlarge, only the grid, which can make it awkward for tight crops on small areas of an image. ps. a note for Canon, "triming" is spelt with two m's The controls

An excellent degree of printing control is on offer from the iP6700 |
Looking at the printer controls
1. The power on/off button
2. The media feeder selector, press to switch between rear or bottom feeder
3. Transfer memory card to computer hard drive
4. Start Easy Print software - I am not sure if you can define this button to start another application - I will find out later.
5. Menu button
6. Go back to a previous screen
7. The OK or set button and navigation keys
8. The settings button, select media, size, borderless etc.
9. Search button, this allows you to search for files by date from a memory card.
10. The trimming button, press this to crop a picture
11. -/+ Zoom
control , magnify or reduce the displayed image.
12. Print button
13. Stop/Reset button, cancel a print job with this button.
14. Alarm light, it flashes if a printer error has occurred, if the power light and the alarm light flash alternately then this indicates bad news - a service call may be required.
The controls are easy enough to master without having to refer to the on-line user guide. I will install the bundled applications and drivers next. Click here to join in with the iP6700 Forum |
