Media

Although I have been predominantly using Photo Paper Pro throughout this review, Canon has introduced some other more interesting Fine Art papers. I suspect that some of the Fine Art media has been introduced with the forthcoming Pixma Pro 9500 in mind (pigment ink printer). I assume that the "Art" media is intended for Limited edition pictures and the Fine Art market. Canon states that prints using ChromaLife inks and Canon media stored in an album will last for 100 years, I have yet to see an A3+ size album. Although dye inks produce a more vibrant looking print, I don't think a collector will be too pleased with their purchase in 30 years time. Having said that, we mustn't forget that conventional wet chemistry colour prints only have a shelf life of about 20 years and collectors haven't been put off by this.(b/w silver prints will last considerably longer),

Semi-gloss - great for portraits - SG-201
Double sided is twice as good - PP-101D
Photo Paper Glossy - PP-101
Matte Photo Paper - MP-101
Premium Matte - FA-PM1
Museum Etching FA-ME1 by Hanhemulhe
Photo Rag FA-PR1 by Hanhemulhe
The all time favourite PPP - PR101

The media is well packaged in a sturdy card pack, but you should take special care when removing individual sheets from the inner cellophane wrapping. There is a sticky strip on one edge of the bag and it is easy to catch the media on this strip. You should also take note of the label on the back, this shows you how the media is packed - it is important to take note of this as it will save you from printing on the wrong side!

An easy way to find the correct side is to slightly moisten your thumb and forefinger and then hold a corner for a few seconds, the side that sticks to your finger is the coated side.

To appreciate the full quality of this media you really need to see a print created with it, I can only show you scans of prints - which will not do justice to the actual print in my hand.

More about media on the next page.....
