Regular readers to this site will know that I avoid getting involved with too much technical talk in my reviews, I prefer to show you samples of what the equipment can actually do with photographs.. However, after looking at my previous page I decided to included a few graphs to show you the difference between the working colour space and printer profiles (Gamut view). This should give you some idea of how many colours a printer can in theory print. The following charts plot the Adobe 1998 colour space (solid lines) and the various profiles (dotted lines). I used the excellent Gamutvision 1.2.1 to produce the Gamut views. Click on the link and download a trial version and try it out on your own profiles.

I have updated the top three images on this page to show the full gamut of each profile - no rendering intent has been applied. This should give a better picture of what each printer can reproduce. Now we can see just how close each printer is to each other.
I will cover Colour profiles in more detail in a separate feature at a later date.
