Printer parts.
The i965 maintains the compact look of the i950 with neat fold away parts. The printer when folded away takes up very little space on the desktop. The front paper catcher has two telescopic sections plus a third flap which forms the front part. Once extended the catcher is sufficiently sturdy, extracting and retracting the catcher is perhaps not as smooth as I have come to expect from a Canon printer.

Two section paper guide on i965 |
Telescopic rear guide on the i950 |
The rear paper guide seems to lack the finish that I admired on the i950. When in the closed position the lid is far from a perfect fit. The lid overhangs the printer, on the i950 it was a perfect fit. The paper guide itself is a two section unit, the top section is a flap which folds out. On the i950 this was a three section telescopic unit. Although you are getting a lot of increased functionality with the new printer. I can't help feeling that some corners have been cut. Having said this, the holder does as it says, it keeps the paper in place and keeps out the dust when folded. The specifications says that 150 sheets can be loaded, together with 20 sheets in the Photo Tray. There is also an optional Paper Feed Cassette available (PFC-10).

Rear removed ready for a duplex attachment |
Twin USB ports |
The rear cover of the printer can be easily removed and a Auto Duplex Printing unit can be attached (DPU-10), this was not supplied (or requested) for the test. I am somewhat puzzled as to why Canon should include this option on a Photo Printer, as far as I am aware there isn't any Canon media available that will allow photo printing on both sides.
Also at the rear there are two USB ports, the top one is a Hi-Speed USB 2 and the lower one is a Full Speed USB 2.0 port. The top one should be used if your computer and cable supports this and the bottom port is for the usual USB 2.0 connection (and Mac computers). Using my Hi-Speed USB 2.0 connection with a Hi-Speed cable I achieved identical results from both ports - 29 seconds for a 6x4 print on plain paper. The one advantage of having two ports is that you can connect two computers to the same printer and share it. I have connected my laptop running Windows ME to the lower port and my desktop running Windows XP to the upper port and it works faultlessly.
I will do the first prints section on Wednesday 14 April
