Features
The one thing that strikes me with the Epson Stylus Photo 1400 is the build quality, it is first class. There is a lot of attention to small detail and the quality of components seems to be of a high standard. Many of the printers I have tested recently have kept the costs down by compromising on essential parts, and as a result I have seem floppy output trays and flimsy rear paper guide etc. I will cover the printer in use later in this review, but for this section I will take a quick overview on the features and parts.

Paper catcher tray closed |
Three extension tray |
The paper output tray is accessed by depressing the front black flap, which then releases a telescopic triple extension paper tray. The tray feels firm and more substantial than many trays I have used in the past.

|
Rear dust cover |
Rear paper feed |
|
|
Rubber non slip pad - for Fine Art Media |
A firm paper guide |
I like the rear paper input tray cover, this helps protect the printer against objects and spiders which may otherwise find a new home. The flap folds out into a double extension media holder. The actual media guide is a lot better than most guides I have tested, a small catch releases the guide which then glides smoothly into position.

Power and USB 2.0 connections |
A mystery cover next to the USB port |
|
|
PictBridge port - for direct printing from camera |
Just three buttons to think about |
At the rear of the printer there is just a power input and USB 2.0 port. Next to the USB port is a blank plate which looks like it should be detachable, but it isn't. I assume that this could be used as a Network port on another model. At the front is a PictBridge port, this is for PictBridge enabled cameras. To the right are three control buttons, Cancel print - Paper eject, Ink Warning and Power On/Off.

The printing chamber |
Printer open and CD tray lowered |
|
|
CD tray fitted |
CD tray aligned ready for printing |
The print head guide rail can be seen in the top picture. I like to watch printers producing prints, and generally Epson have always put a transparent lid on their printers - not on the 1400. I am surprised at how quite this printer is when fitting the inks. I will keep my ears open when I actually produce the first prints. You have to lift the top cover to access the CD tray holder, the lip of the cover keeps the CD tray in place. Once opened a second tray folds out and this has guides for the actual detachable CD tray. The tray has to be pushed in all the way until two white arrows align. I will test CD printing later in the review.
