Driver & Utility installation

Generally I would expect to install a printers drivers before loading up the media, but I am sure it will all become obvious as I progress. As mentioned earlier I am using a USB 2.0 connection for this review, I mention this again because the installation process will look for the printer port and will assign this to the printer. If I were to re-connect to say Firewire then the computer will tell me it has found new hardware.

I have turned the power off on the printer and inserted the installation CD. The installation program takes care of everything, although on the second screen you have the option to install the "EPSON Printer Service Utility 2" , you must select the Advanced button for this.

Select the Install Software button
These three items will be installed
Advanced installation palette
Turn power on and a printer port will be found for you

The entire installation took about 3 minutes. Also on the CD is a 396 page user manual in PDF format. For a printer costing the best part of £2000 I would have expected a printed manual - even my £450 washing machine was supplied with a full colour manual. I wonder what the ink and paper cost would be to print this manual out on the 4000? The manual is well illustrated and very clearly laid out.

The reference guide is in PDF format which can be viewed from the CD or installed to your hard drive

Looking at the printers Properties (via Control panel > Printers & Faxes). Despite loading roll media, the paper available is indicating A4 - perhaps this is just for creating the test print (I still haven't printed anything yet). Under the Colour Management tab there is a list of 22 different media that are automatically selected according to the settings you set. I will look at colour management in more detail later in the review.

A4 selected by default, despite roll media being present
A list of 22 profiles are included
The 4000 has been assigned a Virtual Port
Inks are 2/3rds full and I haven't made a print yet!

The entire installation process worked well, roll media and drivers are now loaded ready for my first prints. Before I proceed take a look at the amount of ink that has been used in the charging process, bearing in mind that a full set of inks will cost in the region of £45.68 each (£365 for an entire set) the amount of ink used will work out at £121 to prime the printer. Of course the next set you buy will not deplete so fast, this is an initial setting up process.

I will be printing for the next hour or two and will publish the results during the rest of the day - keep pressing your F5 key to refresh the pages.
