EPSON R800 printer

Page 8.

More Colour printing

Out of the box the Epson R800 is producing outstanding results which should satisfy most users. The sample prints below have all been printed on Epson Premium Semigloss Paper, using the same settings that I used on page 6 of this review. Many readers have posted requests for me to include custom profiled prints in my reviews. I will include a section later on in the review, but as an experienced professional photographer myself, I can't see how these prints can be improved, short of actually going to the location and seeing the scene with your own eyes. If the pictures look good on this page, then you should see the actual prints. Please bear in mind that these are scans of prints, as such they will not be 100% accurate

Detail is present in the Guards Bear skin and on the print every leg has separation
Detail is present in all the white paintwork, there is no banding in the blue sky
The sky displays many subtle shades of blue, detail is present on the dark roof
Natural skin tones on both images, the pink swimsuit on Sophie is faithful to the material colour

The R800 printer is delivering results that are going to be the envy of every other manufacturer. This printer is producing superb colour prints "out of the box" without having to resort to custom profiles. B/W is disappointing so far, but I am going to try the same image on page 6 with premium semigloss paper and see what the results are. - The print has just been added to page 6.

I will publish some more colour pictures later on in the review, a reader has kindly offered to create some custom profiles for the R800. This should prove interesting. I have also created a custom profile with Monaco EZ colour 2 and although its good it's not a patch on the supplied profile. Many of the subtleties in the skin tone are lost on the Monaco profile. I will use the same image for comparing the profile that is being sent to me.

Monaco custom profile

Many of the subtleties are lost in the scan of the print, but you can see a shift towards magenta in the Monaco profile. Ignore the lightening of tones on Sophie's shoulders in the Epson profile, I will tell you about this problem on page 9.
