EPSON V600 Photo Scanner

Installation

Most installations are now controlled via wizards, simply place the CD in your drive and follow the on screen instructions. Generally there will be a recommended or custom installation. I prefer doing a custom installation; this prevents unwanted applications being installed such as Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software or other basic image database applications etc. The V600 manual is a detailed HTML document which is installed on your hard drive. Epson have included Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 (6 for Mac) on a separate CD, this excellent image editing application adds extra value to the V600. I was disappointed that SliverFast SE wasn’t included with this scanner. However, fortunately Epson Scan does an excellent job with both print and film scans.

Features

The V600 features Epson’s ReadyScan LED technology for instant scanning, this means the scanner doesn’t have to warm up before you can begin using it. Scan times are impressive, a 10x8 colour photograph scanned at 300dpi took 5.5 seconds to preview and 9.5 seconds to perform the scan. Scanning the picture at the same settings using the Epson V750 took 8 seconds to preview and 18 seconds to scan. I will perform film scan times later in this review.

Simple to use buttons for quick workers

There are four buttons on the front of the scanner, from left to right; PDF button, this scans and produces a PDF (Portable Document Format). E-Mail button, this launches Epson Scan independently of your image editing application and gives you the option to save the scan to a location of your choice. Copy button, works in a similar same way as the E-Mail button, I would have liked an option to send the file direct to a printer, this would be useful for straight document copying. However, there is a Copy Utility which links in to your chosen printer and enables you to use the combination as a photo-copier, the down side is that I had to launch the Copy Utility as an application, I couldn’t find a way to just use the Copy button to automatically launch it. The final Start button launches Epson Scan.
