EPSON R1800 A3 printer
Page 6

Somewhere over the Rainbow...

On this page I want to put a variety of pictures through the R1800, just to see how well location colours are rendered. I will cover b/w on the next page.

Someone on the dpreview forum remarked that the reels didn't mean a thing, he would rather see how the R1800 handles landscape photography - Adam this page is for you. All the prints have been made using Premium Glossy Photo paper, with the driver set to Best Photo. The R1800 took 2 minutes 32 seconds to produce the A4 print.

Detail is held in the shadows, greens are slightly on the cool side
Blacks may not be solid, but detail is well held
A good variety of subtle greens

The R1800 seems toe excel with Blue, perhaps Epson have pushed this too far to the cost of the yellows.

Grey's will show up any colour cast, in the sky picture above the grey parts of the clouds are neutral, the battleship on closer inspection shows detail rather than a black silhouette.

R1800 print from same file

I have put the above picture in to keep the peace in my family. It is a shot of my other daughter Elizabeth, she has complained that Sophie gets centre stage too much.

Working through the colours on the above shot. The skin tones are pretty accurate, but could do with a touch of warmth. The red on the print is actually better than the original file, good vibrancy here. The blue coat is slightly cooler, but still good. The greens are again slightly cool. The yellow has lost some of its depth, I have included a picture below where I have corrected the yellow via the Selective colour in Photoshop. The increase was 50%, this would indicate that the Epson profile should be tweaked and I am sure after reading this they will experiment and perhaps (more than likely) re-calibrate. Just to make things clear. The picture below had the yellow increased on the scan of the print, to acheive a correct result. On another actual print I increased the yellow to 100% and also increased the yellow on the printer panel by 10% to achieve good yellowst - nearly there. I will carry on experimenting. No doubt a custom profile (or improved canned profile) would sort this out.

With yellow correction made in Photoshop
Selective Colour +50Y and ink levels after 18 A4's

Ink usage after 18 full coverage A4 prints, seems to be very good, this should be viewed as a rough guide, but based on the levels shown this cartridge should last for a very long time.

B/W page will follow on Monday, first prints are looking neutral.
