VueScan Professional edition

Output & pref tab

I am having trouble finding any faults with this software, Mr Ed Hamrick (author of VueScan) seems to have thought of everything. I have had to change my text several times, just because I found out that any problem or shortcomming had been resolved. One of the annoying features I did find with VueScan was that it always needed a unique file name otherwise it would just overwrite the previous scan, although it would warn you this was going to happen. At last I found a feature I could beef off about, not so. Whilst in the process of reviewing this software, I found that the small "+" symbol at the end of the file name is actually an indicator to say increase the number by one, you can add a "+" to the end of any file name. Many of the features on VueScan are not that obvious, you do have to dig around to find them, but they are there.

On the Output tab you have the option to save the scan as a Tiff or JPEG. The TIFF option lets you choose the bit depth, from 1 (b/w) through to 64 bit RGB. VueScan also has Tiff lossless compression, it will even save two versions of a scan Tiff and JPEG. The JPEG setting also has a compression setting from 1 to 100% (anything lower than 10 is virtually unusable).

Move sliders and preview image updates

There is also a Histogram tab for both Preview and Scan, this shows the RGB values. The top histogram shows the current state of the image, beneath are two sliders, move them inwards and the bottom histogram shows the new values. Click back on the Scan tab and the image is updated with your new values. I would have liked a small preview window on the histogram tab to save going backwards each time an adjustment is made.

The final tab is Preferences. Use this tab to set up the behaiviours of VueScan. Define the button on the front of the scanner to perform a Scan, set the image editor and set other parameters in VueScan. I liked the fact that you can define the work area to your own specifications, including the font size on the interface.

VueScan has just about every control you could possibly need, the interface is perhaps a bit on the clunky side, but the resulting scans leave nothing to be desired. VueScan is a professional quality application at an affordable price.
